A sweet, blood orange twist on the mexican classic!

Margaritas are a great cocktail for those who like a strong and sharp drink (which we do) however something we fancy something sweeter to sip one, enter the blood orange margarita! With a delicious lighter citrus flavour. Of course, normal oranges will also work perfectly in this recipe but we just can’t resist the excuse to buy the gorgeous blood oranges!

To prepare your cocktail you need to first do 2 things, juice the blood oranges and coat the rim of the glasses. Typically, margaritas are served in a salt rimmed glass however we chose to use a half and half mixture of salt and sugar for this recipe as the salt is a bit too intense for the sweeter citrus flavour in the blood oranges. You can use the squeezed orange to run around the rim of the glass to stick the salt and sugar mixture to it, the easiest way to do this is by placing it onto a small plate and running the wetted rim through it!

Once your glass is ready and you’ve got your juice, it’s time to mix things up! Grab a shaker filled with ice and pour in the juice, tequila, triple sec (we used Cointreau) and a squeeze of lime. Then just tightly fit the lid and shake until the whole shaker feels ice cold and pour the margarita into glasses through a strainer so as to hold back the ice.
